Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic and consequent UK national lockdown, the APPG on A Fit and Healthy Childhood has published a series of articles highlighting the myriad ways in which children are being tragically and adversely affected.
We have made the point that to date, despite the sterling efforts of some organisations and pioneering individuals such as The Children’s Commissioner, Anne Longfield, the Government has signally failed to make children central to its daily messaging and presentation of diverse streams of assistance to the public. On 29th April, ‘The Guardian’ championed the nation’s children in its editorial comment https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/28/the-guardian-view-on-children-in-the-pandemic-hidden-victims .
APPG Lead author, Helen Clark said:
This is a brilliant and timely editorial from ‘The Guardian’ and I hope that Ministers will sit up and take note. Nearly two months into lockdown, it must now be said that ‘The Guardian’ is the only national newspaper to state loud and proud that ‘vulnerable children are the hidden victims of this pandemic.’ I could not agree more and my message to the government is: ‘WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?’ I hope that everyone will read this editorial but more important than any of the ills that it so trenchantly identifies is its concluding message which should serve for the Government as both a beacon and a warning.‘Rarely has the lowly and disjointed nature of policymaking regarding children appeared more glaring. The pandemic must bring change.’Helen Clark, Lead Author, The All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood
